CHAPTER SIX

When Lorne got up at seven the following morning, Tom was still asleep. She went downstairs to let Henry out into the garden then switched on the kettle. She stood by the back door, waiting for Henry to finish doing his business before she went back upstairs to get ready to start her day all over again.

Before she left the bedroom, she kissed Tom on the cheek. He didn’t stir, even though she sensed that he was awake. In a way, she was grateful that he didn’t sit up. The last thing she needed was to have a full-blown confrontation at the beginning of her day.

She hugged Henry before letting herself out the front door. She parked her car in the station car park twenty minutes later. Lorne was the first of the team to arrive, not surprising, considering it was only eight o’clock. In the office, she waded through a large pile of post. She’d almost reached the end of her daily chores before she heard movement in the outer office.

Pete poked his head round the door. “You haven’t been here all night, have you?”

“Morning, Pete. No, I got in about eight. Come in and take a seat.” She brought him up to date on what had taken place the previous evening.

“Crap! So, this case has gone from a missing person to a murder enquiry overnight. How did the family take the news?”

She raised an eyebrow and tutted. “How the hell do you think they took it?”

“All right, slapped wrist for me. I was only asking. What now?”

“Our first priority remains with finding that vehicle.”

“I had a thought last night whilst having a couple of beers.”

“Lucky you, go on.”

He interlocked his fingers over his protruding belly. “If we can find out what supermarket Kim used, maybe the CCTV footage will highlight something.”

Lorne narrowed her eyes and pointed a finger at him. “You’re right. After all, that’s the last place she visited as far as we know.”

“Is it worth asking the family?”

“Ordinarily, I would say yes, but I want them to grieve in peace. Let’s try and figure it out for ourselves. See what supermarkets are close to her home, and I’ll ring the estate agents, see if her colleagues have had second thoughts about the store she used close to work.”

“I’ll do that now. Well, after I’ve bought us both a coffee. I need it to get rid of my furry tongue.”

“And you drove into work still hungover?”

“Who said anything about being hungover?” he shot back when he was standing at the door.

“Knowing you, I doubt you stopped at a couple of pints.”

He placed a hand over his heart. “I’m mortally offended that you have such a low opinion of me.”

She tutted. “You’re a liar. Now go and get the coffee.”

Pete reappeared with a coffee and a sheet of paper a few minutes later. “All the supermarkets close to her home and the agency; thought I better look that up too while I was at it.”

“Good man. I’ll ring Fletcher at nine o’clock, see if he can shed any light on it.
